Windsor Oaks Winery, a family owned operation, is seeking a few qualified individuals to fill the roles of our 2014 Harvest production/cellar Interns, and one more qualified individual to fill the role of our hybrid vineyard/lab/cellar intern. Our world class, Sonoma county estate is planted to 210 acres and 18 different varietals of grapes. Crafting ultra-premium wines from our dual appellation, Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill estate vineyards, as well as producing wines from such a variety or varietals is a truly unique experience. The internships will begin around mid-august and finish somewhere in early to mid-November. The right candidates will be energetic and highly motivated people who share our passion for wine and wine production from grape to glass.
Description, Duties, and Responsibilities:
These are all seasonal positions that work under the direction of the Winemaker and the Assistant Winemaker. The cellar/production interns will be assisting with the winemaking from fruit receival to finishing the fermentation/barreling down. The hybrid intern will learn and perform grape sampling and juice analyses along with assisting in the cellar when needed. These are comprehensive internships with exposure to many aspects of winemaking and production, including but not limited to:
All positions:
• Grape receival and processing
• Additions for inoculation, nutrient management, adjustments, etc.
• Pump-overs/punch-downs
• Clean/sanitize tanks and all equipment used in cellar operations
• Operate different types of pumps including positive displacement, air, and bull dog pumps
• Rack, fill, top, stir, clean, and SO2 barrels
• Rack and transfer wine to and from tanks
• Prepare new barrels for wine receival
• Follow written work orders
• Forklift driving and/or dump truck driving
• As we are a small Estate operation, our harvest interns, as with all personnel at Windsor Oaks, will interact and at times may be assigned duties with any aspect of our operation at multiple levels, possibly including occasional hospitality assistance
• Perform all other duties as assigned
Hybrid position only:
• Grape maturity sampling in the vineyard
• Fermentation Brix/Temperature checks
• Lab analyses including but not limited to: pH, TA, VA, SO2, Alcohol, and enzymatic ammonia, NOPA, malic, and RS analyses.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records
• Assist with maintaining/cleaning the lab
Qualifications:
All positions:
• Previous harvest/winemaking experience is essential
• Degree or coursework in winemaking/fermentation sciences is a plus
• A college degree or in-progress degree in life sciences/enology/chemistry/lab experience
• Willingness to learn our production methods and a mind for quality control are a must
• Must commit to working full-time plus extended harvest hours through our harvest season
• Must be highly organized and maintain accurate attention to details
• Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment safely
• Ability to work flexible and extended hours on short notice
• Self-directed yet also willing to take direction
• Excellent English communication skills, written and spoken
• Efficient both individually and on a team
• Must have a valid driver’s license with good driving record and car to get to and from work
• Must be 21 years of age minimum
• Must have legal work status
Hybrid position only:
• College degree or in process degree in Enology/Life Sciences/Chemistry and previous laboratory experience
Work Environment Requirements:
• Ability to work in confined spaces and high places
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly
• Work with chemicals that require protective equipment (goggles, etc.)
• Ability to sit, stand, and walk on uneven surfaces for extended periods of time
• Perform work duties in and outdoors
