Cellarmaster (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Position Summary: The cellarmaster oversees the cellar and production crew, focusing on supervising the production process while participating in work order execution, and coordinates with the winemakers to meet deadlines for production, shipping/receiving, and bottling.

Essential Functions:
•  Coordinate work flow throughout the year for the cellar crew according to winemaking deadlines.
•  Monitor and participate in all cellar activities, including: fruit weighing, crushing, pressing, fermentation, filtering, barrel aging, bottling, shipping/receiving, and other activities. 
•  Coordinate wine production activities with winemakers, communicating and delegating duties to the cellar staff while also contributing to work order completion directly.
•  Hire, train, and supervise full-time cellar staff; provide performance reviews; review timecards and coordinate payroll process; work closely with human resources regarding personnel issues.
•  Arrange and/or recruit extra staff for temporary labor needs, including: harvest, bottling, and special projects.
•  Maintain adequate supplies of all items needed during the winemaking and bottling processes, including consumables and capital items to avoid production downtime.
•  Assist in composing, maintaining, and reviewing of documentation involving: bulk inventory, BOL, work force trainings, process protocols, and maintenance logs. 
•  Act as an on-site safety manager, with responsibilities to include: participating in annual safety training and updates, ensuring workers and facility meet OSHA standards, and providing safety training on selected topics to the cellar staff.
•  Assist with general equipment repair and maintenance as needed and be available for coordinating emergency repairs/maintenance.

Additional Functions:
•  Participate in a team effort to drive forward quality and worker development.
•  Liaison with other facilities within the company and with contract wineries. 

Necessary Skills: 
Language: 
•  Ability to speak and understand English required for all positions. Bilingual English-Spanish ability preferred.
•  Ability to read and interpret documents such as memos, instructions, policies and manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to present information effectively to groups of customers and employees, and participate in one-on-one and small groups situations.
Math:
•  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide accurately, using American and metric units of currency, weight, volume, and/or distance. Ability to recognize and correct inaccuracies when using calculator or computer spreadsheet. 
Logic:
•  Ability to apply common sense understanding to multiple tasks, analyze and solve practical problems, prioritize and delegate tasks and projects, work both independently and as part of a team, and adapt to frequent changes in the work environment.
Computer:
•  Proficient in digital communication and data basing, including: e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheet, database programs, graphic arts, and/or publishing.

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses: 
•  Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college or university with 2 years of cellar experience; or 4 years cellar experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•  Current, valid Driver’s License, insurable driving record, and proof of current automobile insurance required.
•  Forklift certification and/or training

Physical Requirements: 
•  Heavy physical activity performing regular strenuous activities, including standing, walking, climbing, reaching, carrying, pushing, pulling, squatting, and other motions. Stability and balance adequate for elevated and/or narrow work areas. Requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs. in weight independently, and up to 100 lbs. or more with assistance. Manual dexterity sufficient to reach, grasp, hold, handle items, and work with the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Clear vision (close and distant), peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Hearing adequate for working safely around machinery, vehicles, and other equipment. 

Work Environment:
•  Indoor and outdoor environment with variable lighting, temperature and/or ventilation. Areas may or may not be heated, air-conditioned, or shaded. Outdoor periods frequently required in changing weather conditions. Exposure to fumes and/or a variety of chemicals. Moderate to high noise levels typical of machinery, power tools, vehicles, and other equipment. (Note: PPE provided for all workers.)

Schedule and Travel Requirements:
•  Variable schedule: Primarily a set schedule but requires weekends, periodic evenings, and/or periodic or seasonal overtime particularly during grape harvest.
•  Position may include minimal overnight travel and/or travel by auto or air.
