Newton Vineyard is seeking for Harvest Cellar Workers (expected start date: mid August 2016).
Main responsibilities: Perform beginning to intermediate cellar operations with limited supervision during Harvest season.
Handle grape deliveries and participate in cluster sorting.
Operate presses and crushers.
Drive forklift.
Perform routine operations of pumps to rack, transfer, and clarify juice and wine.
Perform chemical additions to juice and wine.
Perform extraction operations during red fermentation and maceration (pump over, rack-and-return, aeration)
Set both manual and automatic tank temperature controls.
Monitor indigenous fermentations.
Collect wine/juice samples.
Support the laboratory by conducting routine analysis and data entry.
Perform intensive barrel work in caves (stirring, stacking, de-stacking, racking, filling, cleaning)
Participate in tastings and discussions with the Winemaking team. Learn from a permanent cellar crew that average 10 years of Newton Winemaking knowledge.
Qualifications and experience required:
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Languages: English required
Professional experience & know how:
Minimum 1 year winery cellar experience.
Knowledge or ability to learn safe cellar practices, including safe handling of chemicals
Knowledge of winery cellar operating procedures
Ability to be trained in confined space entry process and procedures
Ability to drive a forklift and become forklift certified.
Technical & management skills:
Ability to understand and perform basic math.
Ability to understand and perform basic measurements.
Ability to train and direct less skilled workers, including seasonal labor.
Personal & interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
