Vineyard Manager (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

The Vineyard Manager is responsible for all aspects of running the vineyards a business unity including farming plan, cost containment, labor management, health/safety and environmental management. The Vineyard Manager ensures business objectives are met related to fruit quality, vine health and balance, sustainability, health and safety, financial planning, redevelopment and estate acreage growth opportunities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Develop annual detailed farming plan at the block level for all estate vineyards. Manage farm plans for each location and create calendars for viticulture practices.

• Oversee, develop and implement sustainable practices in irrigation, fertilization and pest management that ensure the highest standards for wine quality and vineyard health.

• Direct and oversee disease and pest control, proper pruning, tying, suckering, frost and heat control.

• Develop and manage spray program, fertilization plan, irrigation program, cultivation and cover crop regime.

• Assesse all vineyard blocks and develop a plan to improve areas which need improvement.

• Responsible for annual vineyard budget including both farming and vineyard development.

• Manage labor costs by vineyard/task and ensures that budgeted number is achieved.

• Direct all viticulture labor including in-house crews and outside contracts including; pruning, canopy management, tractor work, harvest and all other viticulture practices.

• Maintain close supervision of crews during harvesting of field; ensure employee health and safety, high quality and cleanliness.

• Implement vineyard health and safety programs to include policies, employee training and prevention practices.

• Develop policies and procedures for all vineyard operations.

• Work closely with winemaker and other departments for contract vineyard negotiations.

• Purchase and maintain all equipment including tractors, vehicles, trailers and implements. Ensure

preventative maintenance is routinely conducted and documented.

• Purchase and maintain inventory for all vineyard supplies; i.e. chemicals, personal protective equipment, equipment and supplies.

• Document vineyard planting by varietal, viticulture growing trail, tonnage records and weigh tags accurately. Generate harvest yield forecasts and maintains historical records.

• Manage and collect all viticulture data including: phenologic, nutritional (plant and soil), NDVI, pruning weights, pests, disease and climate reports.

• Coordinate logistics during harvest with winemaker ensuring supplies, crews and delivery of the fruit to the crush pad.

• Maintain vineyard certification through CCOF

• Drive the vineyard development process. Order new vines, replace designated vines and ensure vineyard map is updated accordingly. Work closely with Winemaker on planting decisions including; clonal selection, layout, design, irrigation installation, and planting.

• Perform all other duties as assigned or needed for vineyard properties

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors of Science in Viticulture or related field

• Minimum of 5 years vineyard management experience

• Expert level experience in vineyard management practices, principals and their effect on wine

• Strong mathematical and analytical abilities, able to make complex calculations, develop budgets and track costs accurately

• Strong project management, organizational and problem-solving skills

• Strong commitment to data integrity and high values to deliver excellence

• Ability to work a flexible schedule with extended hours

• Strong computer skills in Excel, Word, and Outlook

• Ability to work independently and with a team

• Experienced formal training in health and safety programs including pesticide training

• Strong written and oral communication skills in English, bilingual (Spanish) is also required

• Possess a valid California Driver’s License and have a good driving record

• Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities

• Hands on field experience with mechanical equipment as related to vineyard operations
