The Tasting Room Assistant Manager ensures exemplary guest service, provides strong leadership, supervises the Guest Service Associate team and guest flow in the tasting room and focuses on achieving the monthly, quarterly and annual sales goals. This position is also responsible for inventory, staffing, non-wine sales (merchandise), employee training and retention. The position works closely with the Tasting Room Manager and other departments to develop and implement plans that improve the guest experience, increase foot traffic, drive revenue, improve profitability and elevate the Peju image. As a hospitality- and guest-focused role, this position works evenings, weekends and holidays.

• Ensure tasting room staff conduct themselves as brand ambassadors demonstrating positive

characteristics of exceptional guest service.

• Lead by modeling the highest level of guest service and focused sales behavior at all times.

• Spend most of the guest service hours in contact with guests, Guest Service Associates and

Tasting Room Ambassadors, as well as events and hospitality staff.

• Maintain and support all existing company policies and procedures; operate based on best service

practices and the changing needs of the business.

• Look for opportunities to improve existing company policies and then create and implement those new procedures and policies.

• Participate in and help lead weekly sales meetings with all Tasting Room Ambassadors and GSA to discuss sales, operational issues, company/policy changes, and progress on company and departmental goals.

• Schedule, train, supervise and evaluate all Tasting Room Ambassadors and GSA along with the Tasting Room Manager. Provide daily coaching as needed to improve and develop sales and guest service performance.

• Perform any needed office work before and after tasting room business hours. Operations

• Ensure that the Tasting Room Ambassadors and GSA work schedule is posted four weeks in advance, is accurate and that the Tasting Room is staffed according to procedure to ensure exceptional guest service on holidays, weekends and during the busy season.

• Complete all daily, weekly and monthly reports accurately and timely. Understand be able to complete opening and closing procedures.

• Conduct training for Tasting Room Ambassadors and GSA to ensure that exemplary hospitality best practices are upheld and that winery and wine information is communicated to guests accurately and consistently.

• Conduct sales training for Tasting Room Ambassadors and GSA and work one-on-one with personnel to ensure that sales skills are constantly honed and improved and they are meeting their goals.

• Ensure guest service concerns are followed up until they are resolved (on the same day and continuously until the guest is completely satisfied). Once the service issue is resolved, analyze and then implement solutions to eliminate any future occurrences.

• Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the tasting room, TR office, garden and all grounds.

• Ensure daily reservations are accurately updated, printed and communicated to staff to elevate the guest experience.

• Anticipate guest needs and look for opportunities daily to fulfill unexpressed guest needs.

Financial/Inventory Control

• Effectively manage operating costs including labor according to budget. Review financial reports with Tasting Room Manager monthly.

Achieve monthly revenue targets for TR Sales, TR phones and Wine Club Sign up. Ensure each team member is meeting their goal and is held responsible if they are not.

• Ensure cash handling procedures are followed, recorded, and counted accurately. Ensure security of assets including keys, safe and cash is maintained at all times.

• Monitor and ensure staff strictly follows inventory control procedures including: sales register receipt process, BTRs, no charge slips and transfers.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

• College level supervision and managerial courses, preferably with emphasis on sales and marketing or equivalent experience.

• One to two years’ experience managing retail operations at the store level.

• Five years’ experience leading sales teams to peak performance levels, and proven history of consistently increasing sales year over year.

• Outstanding team builder, motivator and mentor.

• Knowledge of wines and wine production.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Self-confidence, with the ability to connect with guests from all walks of life and income levels.

• Fearless, while gracious, in the pursuit of asking for the sale. 

• Above average ability to empathize with and recognize a guest’s most subtle buying signals.

• Genuine, honest and credible in meeting the guest wherever he or she is on the buying continuum, and connecting with the guest in such a way so as to eliminate the fear of making a buying mistake. • Without ego in making others feel important.

• Ability to multi task and simultaneously meet deadlines.

• Creative and professional problems solver.

• Ability to gain proficiency on AMS order processing system within 3 months of hire.

• Detail oriented with ability to consistently produce accurate results.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
