General Manager Job Description

Broken Earth Winery located in Paso Robles California is seeking a General Manager to run the day to day operations of an exciting privately owned California Certified Sustainable Vineyard and Winery with emerging world class brands. Broken Earth Winery has 2500 total acres in Paso Robles of which over 700 acres are currently under vine and producing all estate fruit. The General Manager will work closely with executive management to increase sales, accomplish strategic initiatives, and inspire employees to achieve their goals. The General Manager position requires demonstrated success in retail sales, employee management, financial management, and operational policy formation as well as knowledge of the legal aspects of running a winery including federal and state government reporting responsibilities and compliance.

 

Reporting Relationships

The General Manager reports to the Vice President of Indeck Energy Services, Inc., the parent company of Broken Earth Winery. Indeck Energy Services, Inc. is a privately held company located in Buffalo Grove Illinois and is a leading developer, owner and operator of independent power projects including the production of steam, electricity, wood pellets and ethanol.

The General Manager will also work closely with the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Broken Earth Winery who reports to the CEO and owner of Indeck Energy Services, Inc. The EVP is responsible for Vineyard Management, Winemaking, Production, and Wholesale Sale of grapes, bulk wine and cased product.

Reporting to the General Manager will be the Controller, Marketing Manager, and the Retail Sales Manager.

 

Responsibilities

The General Manager will be responsible through its managers for all Accounting, Compliance, Marketing and Retail Sales Operations including tasting room operations, wine club, direct to consumer sales, private label retail sales, café and events. Specifically the General Managers responsibilities include:

. Work with Controller and EVP to develop annual budgets, cash flow forecasts and annual strategic                                              plan and performance goals to improve sales and profitability and control costs

. Review current winery operations and recommend actions and plans to improve profitability and increased retail sales

. Oversee the hiring/firing of all winery staff and Managers for departments under your purview to ensure the winery has the right number of qualified employees with the required skill set to accomplish their job responsibilities.  

. Proactively resolve any actual and potential employee relations issues and or problems and maintain compliance with all federal state regulations concerning employment and adherence to Employee Handbook in coordination with the HR Manager of Indeck Energy Services, Inc.

.  Coordinate with Corporate legal and Third Party Compliance Vendor to ensure the winery is in compliance with all licensing requirements and all State and Federal Liquor laws and that all applications, returns, and payments are timely filed and/or paid.

 

Professional Requirements

.  MBA preferred however a Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field is acceptable

.  5+ years in a senior management position at a winery is preferred, similar experience in a wine related business may be considered

. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, internet Use and Outlook and helpful if have a working knowledge of QuickBooks and Vin65 Ecommerce software.

. Ability to travel to promote sales and attend Wine Industry Events

. Strong leadership and communication skills with an emphasis in team building and problem solving

. Success in Managing Retail sales of wine including Direct to Consumer sales

. Possess excellent record-keeping and organizational skills

. Ability to formulate a plan for long-term success and gain support for the vision and implementation of the plan.

. Ability to sit and operate a computer and ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs.

 .Excellent analytical and creative skills with attention to detail with effective time and project management skills

The General Manager is a full time salaried position including Health, Vision and Dental insurance with paid time off. Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive in the industry.
