Position Summary: In conjunction with the Tasting Room Manager, the Tasting Room Supervisor is responsible for the daily Tasting Room operations, interdepartmental interface, and ensuring customers have an exceptional experience. Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment as well as have strong logical problem-solving skills in both simple and complex situations. Must be open to new ideas and concepts, able to carry out multiple tasks and projects, and comfortable working independently and as part of a team. Responsibilities include directly supervising Tasting Room staff of 5 to 10, including temps and seasonal employees as well as providing back-up assistance to the Tasting Room Manager.

Supervisor Responsibilities – Essential Duties:

  • Provides leadership and supports; coaches, guides, nurtures, and develops staff serving as a positive role model for the staff at all times.
  • Drives company focus, manages culture, encourages strong work ethic, and fosters an environment of trust and respect.
  • Develops individual performance plans in alignment with company goals and objectives; communicates clearly defined objectives; maintains level of productivity in unit.
  • Trains employees to do their job; set standards for work performance using the Customer Service training module for guidelines.
  • Readily accepts responsibility for own actions and/or those of their team.
  • Monitors performance and provides feedback to direct reports through formal annual reviews; regularly communicates with staff to achieve mutual understanding and desired results.
  • Recognizes and addresses performance strengths and limitations of staff.
  • Supervises employee attendance to ensure compliance with company standards; monitors and approves overtime.
  • Communicates and supports company policies and decisions in a positive manner.
  • Resolves employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner and reports such issues to the Tasting Room Manager.
  • Allows for and contributes needed resources and coordinates work efforts when necessary.
  • Provides employees with a safe and rewarding work environment.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversees and directs the Tasting Attendant staff and activities of the tasting room; consults regularly with them to ensure they are prepared to address the daily operations.
  • Performs the duties and essential functions of the Tasting Room Attendant and leads by example.
  • Handles customer concerns and complaints and reports all customer service issues to Tasting Room Manager in a concise, organized manner.
  • Executes sales and strategic goals for profitability through retail and wine sales revenue, increased Wine Club memberships, and controlling costs.
  • Navigates and remains current with Tasting Room software and programs.
  • Attends networking events as approved by manager to remain current on trends in the greater Napa area and wine industry to promote BSEW.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
  • Supervises wine inventory movement as directed by the Tasting Room Manager.
  • Tracks Sales and other essential data as required by Tasting Room Manager.

Position Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, sales, related field preferred or equivalent experience.

Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience supervising a team in a retail, hospitality, or similar environment. Experience in a wine tasting room environment a plus.

Knowledge: Demonstrated leadership and professional demeanor with a successful track record; excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, customer service, business math, and organizational skills; detail oriented; results driven; PC literate (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to navigate in the Internet/Intranet environments and use Tasting Room system. Have strong critical thinking and problem solving skills in a fast-paced work environment. Possess working knowledge of wine, wine industry, and/or wine culture. Must be able to work a flexible schedule (weekends, evenings and holidays).
