POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Sr. Cost Accountant plays a critical role in the accounting, financial reporting and analysis of wine inventory and cost of goods sold. This position is responsible for calculating, maintaining and updating wine costing, as well as performing the accounting, reporting and reconciliation for grape/bulk purchases and sales, farming and vineyard development costs, wine production and other operational costs associated with inventory and production.  This position ensures that all wine inventory and cost of goods sold are accounted for in accordance with Company, GAAP, SEC and other regulatory guidelines.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Documents and communicates standard operating procedures and policies pertaining to the company’s inventory and cost accounting methodology. Makes recommendations to improve or streamline procedures. 

  • Maintains the company’s cost accounting system, including set up of standard cost estimates, reconciliation to actual costs and implementation of revised cost through the inventory sub ledger and general ledger.

  • Provides ongoing analysis and review of wine cost of goods and gross margin; identifies capacity constraints and traces costs back to underlying activities.

  • Coordinates between production and marketing to prepare bill of material requirements for ongoing and new products, identify and implement cost savings strategies.

  • Performs monthly general ledger close for grapes, bulk wine, in-process and finished goods inventory. Ensures timely and accurate preparation and review of reserves and accruals, journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, management reports and other financial analysis as required.

  • Prepare, review and present inventory valuation analyses on a routine basis to finance and operations leadership teams.

  • Prepares monthly management reporting on farming, wine production and facilities operations.

  • Administers all grape and bulk wine contracts. Serves as the financial liaison between the production teams and finance management to execute new contracts, renewals or addendums.

  • Calculates and prepares grower payments and reconciles to grower contracts.

  • Calculates, prepares and processes grape and bulk wine sales transactions.

  • Assists with production planning, analysis and budgeting activities related to wine inventory costs.

  • Develops allocation methods for overhead and labor costs.

  • Prepares and analyzes accounting schedules in preparation of financial statements, tax reports, and other internal and external reports as required.

  • Support quarterly and annual audits by the external auditors, assist in Sarbanes-Oxley documentation, audit and lead schedules.

  • Assists with related special projects as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in related field or equivalent; advanced degree, CPA or CMA highly desirable.

  • Minimum four to six years of experience in general accounting, cost accounting or combination of both.

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), cost accounting theory and financial aspects of manufacturing.

  • Experience in building and managing key metrics and operational reporting (beyond just producing financial reports).

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Navision software experience a plus.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy, with a high level of integrity.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees.

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work amidst constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.

  • Strong organizational, project, and time management expertise; critical attention to deadlines.

  • Effective communication skills, verbal and written, with employees and external parties at all levels.

  • Passion and curiosity for continuous process improvement.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
