MARKETING ASSISTANT (Wine Jobs: Sales & Marketing)

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide wide-ranging support for the marketing and public relations department with a concentration in marketing coordination, analysis, events and public relations. Skills required include organizational skills focused on POS project management and execution, event and travel management, analytic skills with focus on budget tracking, IRI/data reporting and analysis, research, extreme creativity and attention to detail focused on writing, graphic arts, digital and social media, and elevated positive consumer experience skills in hospitality and consumer interaction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

Marketing Support

        Under the guidance of the Senior Brand Manager

POS/Collateral/Marketing Program Support [30%]

  • Produce Best Press sell sheets/scorecards and distribute to Regional Sales Managers and trade partners
  • Update all websites in a timely fashion with key trade information, including winemakers notes, Best Press and related acclaim POS
  • Coordinate the production of vintage tasting notes in-line with latest production schedule, including working with winemaking to gather information and writing notes to agreed upon templates
  • Manage and track brand and project budgets, providing timely updates. Manage and code invoices.
  • Copywriting for brochures, sell sheets, misc collateral and POS as directed
  • Create, maintain and improve internal systems for the distribution of marketing materials and sales tools to appropriate audiences
  • Coordinate the development and creation of Milestones that are in-line with the brands’ identities and consumer targets.
  • Manage Coupons/Rebates with POS and Coupon agencies.

Business Analytics [15%]

  • In partnership with SBM, regularly evaluates all aspects of brand performance, including shipments, depletions and IRI/Nielsen trends. Effectively consolidates analysis into top line learning and provides recommended actions when necessary. Communicate IRI data to sales and marketing teams via Scorecards.  All brand scorecards to be updated quarterly and in conjunction with appropriate Milestones.

Marketing Presentations [15%]

  • Work with brand and trade marketing to develop Milestones decks for presentation to Sales team.
  • Create, edit and maintain various marketing presentations

Winemaker Travel [10%]

  • Manage winemaker travel, including identifying prospective travel periods, offering windows to field sales and evaluating, with input from senior sales leaders and marketing, the best use of winemaker time to achieve brand goals. Post and communicate travel calendar.  Evaluate and continue to refine protocols and process for winemaker travel, assuring that travel follows best practices for media engagement, direct-to-consumer sales development and brand development.

Consumer Wine & Trade Events [15%]

  • With input from the sales team, identify and evaluate opportunities to participate in national, regional and local wine events. Research new events and analyze for potential use in incentive trips for distributors.  Coordinate logistics and arrange staffing, occasionally pouring.  Assure best practices for gathering direct-to-consumer data and presenting brands are followed.  Evaluate and recommend ongoing improvements.
  • Serve as contact person for trade organizations to assure that opportunities for marketing coordination and special programs are evaluated and when appropriate, executed. Such groups include the Napa Valley Vintners, Sonoma County Vintners, Mount Veeder Alliance, PS I Love You!, ZAP, Wines of Argentina, Wine Australia, Wines of South Africa, and ongoing major varietal focused groups such as World of Pinot Noir, Pinot Days etc.
  • Manage consumer wine and trade events calendar

Public Relations [15%]

  • Respond to inquiries for information, insights and samples for evaluation
  • Manage targeted sampling program for key media, including production of supporting materials, shipping and tracking results
  • Oversee acclaim label advertising
  • Collaboratively develop a wine competitions strategy, to include which items to focus on across the Hess Family Wine Estates portfolio, which competitions to enter, processing entries and tracking results, as well as maximizing the value of the awards received
  • Organize participation in tasting events related to success at wine competitions

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree (or the equivalent).  Preference given to emphasis in marketing and business analysis, organizational management, communications, public relations and related fields of study.
  • Passion for wine and working understanding of the wine business, direct-to-consumer and/or wine marketing experience, wine program certifications a plus
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to serve as brand ambassador at public and private events
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.   Experienced in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Comfortable in small office environment, with fluid assignments and often changing priorities, matrix management style
  • Collegial nature, positive, “can do” attitude, able to handle sometimes conflicting assignments and multi-tasking.
  • Project management: ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines.
  • Curious and able to seek improvements in systems, protocols and processes on an independent basis. Striving for continuous growth and improvement.

  • Able to work flexible hours to allow for events
  • Willingness for periodic domestic travel to gain knowledge of important markets

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee will often be required to lift and move cases of wines weighing up to 45 lbs each.
