The Santa Lucia Highlands’ appellation is one of the crown jewels of California viticulture, growing and producing some of the state’s best Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. The appellation encompasses more than 6,000 acres of prime vineyards, planted on the elevated, alluvial fans of the Santa Lucia mountain range in close proximity to nearby Monterey Bay.

Formed in 2005, the Santa Lucia Highlands Wine Artisans (SLHWA) is a non-profit association of vineyards and wineries that grow grapes in the S.L.H. or use the appellation’s fruit to craft their vintage releases. The SLHWA is the main informational resource and voice of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. The group is seeking a new Executive Director.

Working with the SLHWA’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and carrying out impactful, engaging, and consistent marketing and messaging programs and events that promote the S.L.H. to the industry, trade, press, and consumers.  

The position is creative, challenging, and multi-faceted. In addition to marketing outreaches, press communications, and general operations, the Executive Director is responsible for the financial viability of the SLHWA, through membership growth, securing sponsorships, fundraising events, and working with outside organizations and vendors. The Executive Director is the key spokesperson for the association and the appellation.

General Breakdown of Duties:
Marketing and Trade / Media Relations: 50%
Administrative and Fundraising: 25%
Events Management: 25%  

Desired Qualifications:

·         B.A. / B.S. in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Organizational Management, and / or equivalent disciplines and career experience.

 

·         Track record in creating and managing brand development and marketing efforts and campaigns.

 

·         Wine industry trade and media experience and relationships highly desirable.

 

·         Experience organizing and managing trade and public events.

 

·         Excellent written and oral communications skills are a must; writing samples will be requested.

 

·         Independent, conscientious, self-starting work ethic – the SLHWA Executive Director is the group’s sole employee.

 

·         Outgoing people skills – this is a highly visible position that requires constant interaction with members, the press, trade, consumers, and industry and community partners.

 

·         Creative experience with traditional, digital, and social media programs and r.o.i. analytics.

 

·         Proficient in MS Office, Excel, Constant Contact, and website cms.

·         Ability to lift / carry forty pounds.


The SLHWA Executive Director post is a full time, independent contractor position. Hours of work vary and will include occasional weekends; occasional travel necessary. Compensation dependent on qualifications and experience.
