Position Purpose:

Acting on own initiative this position manages short and long term capital project budgeting ($20M to $35M annually), detailed planning, project design, presentation and execution with a strong emphasis on cost control and customer collaboration/satisfaction. The VP of Engineering & Maintenance is a Lean leader who utilizes proven process improvement methodology to establish engineering standards, develop/improve processes, establish metrics, reduce operating costs and develop long-term facility plans for multiple sites.  

VP Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Creating, communicating, and implementing the organization’s vision, mission, and overall direction
  • Leading, guiding, directing, and evaluating the work of other leaders including assistant vice presidents, directors, and managers 
  • Formulating and implementing the strategic plan that guides the direction of the business or their area of responsibility
  • Achieving the organization’s overall strategic goals and profitability requirements as determined by the strategic plans
  • Forming, staffing, guiding, leading, and managing an organization sufficient to accomplish the vice president’s responsibilities and job requirements
  • Overseeing the complete operation of an organization in accordance with the direction established in the strategic plans
  • Evaluating the success of the organization
  • Maintaining awareness of both the external and internal competitive landscape, opportunities for expansion, customers, markets, new industry developments and standards, and so forth
  • Performing other responsibilities as assigned by the President or the CEO
  • Holding self and others responsible for the demonstrating the company culture through personal behavior and actions

 Essential Duties:

  • Works collaboratively with executive management, senior management and key stakeholders to develop technical strategies that deliver safety, environmental, quality, energy, maintenance and OEE programs in order to continuously improve overall performance
  • Manages Strategic Facilities Planning including development and maintenance of a long term (5 year) capital plan
  • Leads & directs efforts of assigned Engineering & Maintenance staff, including Directors, Managers, and Project Engineers in their roles and responsibilities to meet objectives in safety, quality, cost, and customer service; Develops the talent of direct reports by partnering on training and development plans for each employee
  • Drives all process improvements and daily operation utilizing strong Lean tools and methodology
  • Drives employee engagement, training, and development to maximize manufacturing reliability
  • Ensures that all manufacturing/facility systems are properly resourced and that all resources are efficiently utilized
  • Formally documents final design requirements of all pending projects and as-built documents for all completed projects
  • Develops detailed capital project packages, submits for approval and is responsible to manage budget
  • Provides appropriate training/guidance to vendors and internal staff relating to project specific tasks
  • Manages contracted labor on assigned projects to ensure full compliance with internal and external safety/environmental policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with staff to determine the most cost effective and efficient way to utilize internal verses external labor for projects
  • Establish engineering standards and processes to achieve best in class performance and develops a scorecard to measure success
  • Establishes and maintains technical standards, documentation, specifications and procedures for technical activities in accordance with the latest industry/legal requirements and best practices
  • Proactively contributes to the company goal of zero accidents; Understands and ensures compliance to all plant safety requirements. Drives behavioral safety culture
  • Engineer’s safety and sustainability into all capital and maintenance projects and activities
  • Continuously applies sound engineering solutions to resolve hindrances to equipment/process efficiencies and to drive continuous improvement
  • Performs follow-up analysis to identify and resolve recurring operational issues
  • Collaborates with finance to create and execute a maintenance and capital budget to ensure that financial allocations and obligations are set, administered and met
  • Manages department costs and participates in budget review meetings; Continuously identifies opportunities and implements sustainable solutions to reduce costs while maintaining quality
  • Understands and ensures regulatory compliance and works collaboratively with: OSHA, EPA, USDA, FDA, local fire/police/health/utilities department(s), Weights and Measures, and other regulatory/governmental agencies

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Engineering, Business or related field. MBA preferred
  • 10+ years supervisory / Maintenance / Project Management experience
  • 10+ years of experience in Engineering or Maintenance in a manufacturing or similar environment
  • Strong Lean skill set and  a minimum of 5 years’ experience applying Lean principles
  • PLC systems / Ability to read PLC Ladder Logic
  • Electro-mechanical systems
  • Utility systems (steam, compressed air, refrigeration, etc.)
  • Food industry experience
  • TPM experience

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • Black Belt or similar Lean certification
  • Experience with SAP; Microsoft Project; CAD

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional influence management skills with the ability to manage cross-functional resources without direct reporting relationships
  • Excellent communication skills – both formal and informal with the ability to communicate within all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of managerial finance

  • Strong computer application skills, including Microsoft Office Suite

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able and comfortable climbing stairways and work at heights up to 45 feet
