Position Purpose:

Acting on own initiative manages all aspects of the Analytical Lab, Sampling Department, and Headspace Inspection to support Delicato wine quality from grape to bottle.  Develops, implements, and monitors processes within each area.  Ensures accurate data is produced and distributed to customers in a timely manner.   Provides training to staff, including instructions on hazardous materials, equipment, and other factors specific to the position.

  • Monitors performance and provides feedback to direct reports through formal and informal performance feedback; regularly communicates with staff to achieve mutual understanding and desired results.
  • Recognizes and addresses performance strengths and limitations of subordinates.
  • Manages employee attendance to ensure compliance with Company standards; approve/monitor overtime.
  • Communicates and supports Company policies and decisions in a positive manner.
  • Develops staffing needs, selects new employees, makes recommendations in job evaluation and compensation, and recommends termination actions.
  • Conducts team meetings with department employees; includes monthly safety topic, ISO, DOE and other applicable training.
  • Handles employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner.
  • Provides employees with a safe, comfortable, and rewarding work environment.
  • Prepares and monitors department budget.
  • Plans and organizes all tasks within the Analytical Lab, Sampling Department and Headspace Inspection.

Essential Duties:

  • Understands the theory of each analytical procedure to troubleshoot and anticipate potential problems.
  • Audits analytical data, identifies potential problems, and notifies Winemakers.
  • Recommends equipment and personnel improvements to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Performs, and/or trains personnel on, routine maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of analytical lab instruments and equipment.
  • Purchases supplies for the Analytical Lab, Sampling Department, and Headspace Inspection.
  • Ensures that wine stored at offsite non-DFV facilities are inspected, sampled, and analyzed.
  • Ensures that all lab equipment is calibrated and/or standardized and that all calibrations and standardizations are documented.
  • Organizes weekly and monthly round robins between all labs and troubleshoots out of spec analyses.
  • Provides technical support to satellite laboratories.
  • Oversees the domestic and international shipment of all bulk wine samples to potential and existing customers.
  • Initiates and finalizes the review and updating of all standard operating procedures and forms.
  • Drives continuous improvement in all areas to ensure our processes meet the requirements of our customers.
  • Performs all DFV analysis procedures.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Participates in blend evaluations, tasting panels, and sensory projects.
  • Participates in winery and lab tours.
  • Collaborates with outside wine labs and academia on current analyses.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or related field (Biochemistry, Biology, Enology, Food Technology).
  • 5 years’ experience in related environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.  Basic understanding of the winemaking process and sensory evaluation skills. 
  • Strong computer skills.  Proficient in Microsoft Office. 
  • Basic understanding of statistics. 
  • Thrives well under pressure and in an exciting environment. 
  • Ability to work at heights up to 50ft.
  • Climb stairs, squat, and kneel.
  • Lift up to 50lbs.
  • Walk and stands for long periods of time.

Working Conditions/Standards:

  • Most work is performed in the analytical lab in a temperature controlled environment. Occasional exposure to fumes, gasses, or dust may occur.
