Wente Vineyards is seeking a Cellar Intern to join the Winemaking team for the 2017 harvest. This is a full time, seasonal, hourly position, beginning in August and lasting through harvest (typically mid to end of November). This dynamic position will provide valuable experience in cellar operations as well as an opportunity to work with numerous wine varietals, and styles. The ideal candidate will have an up-for-anything attitude and take pride in their work, no matter how small the task. S/he will have an interest in winemaking, respect for and sense of comradery with members of the team, a good work ethic and desire to be a part of the harvest family. It’s expected that the Harvest Intern will have a flexible schedule during the employment period, be eager and willing to work long extended hours, be physically fit enough to lift/move awkward objects or smart enough to ask for help when they can’t. The ability to be detail oriented while keeping in mind the big picture goal is essential. We source our fruit exclusively from our Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco vineyards. We strive to make world-class wines at Wente and desire to work with others who share the same vision.

The Cellar Intern will gain experience in many facets of the winery, but will mainly be responsible for the following: 

• Perform additions to wine and must.

• Assist in receiving and processing fruit, sorting, pressing, etc.

• Perform punch downs, pump-overs.

• Monitor fermentation Brix and temperature as needed.

• Racking juice, filling, topping, and stirring barrels.

• Removing pomace from tanks & presses.

• Safe operation of a forklift.

• Accurate record keeping.

• Operate crusher/destemmer, press, conveyor, and pump.

• General cleaning and sanitization of winery and winery equipment. 

• Additional assignments, as needed.

Requirements:

• Cellar experience or winemaking education, desired.

• Previous winery or harvest experience beneficial

• Serious passion for wine and winemaking

• A strong attention to detail, positive attitude, willingness to work hard and get dirty, and ability to work well with others is essential

• Ability to perform the physical demands of cellar work and lift and carry 50 pounds. Bending, stooping, and climb ladders and barrels.

• Ability to work long hours/weekends and in various conditions.

• Valid CA Driver’s License required.

• Must be 21 years of age or older, due to the nature of the work being performed.

• Spanish speaking is a plus.
