Position Summary:

Responsible for monitoring 1000 - 2000 acres of the San Bernabe Vineyard, the Viticulture Technician performs assigned tasks as directed by the Senior Viticulturist.  Tasks consist primarily of field scouting, collecting data, monitoring and reporting.  The position will also collaborate with the Operation Supervisor(s)/Lead(s) by tracking the FLC performance and providing feedback in order to improve the quality and uniformity of the practices. The Viticulture Technician must have a willingness to develop his/her knowledge of good viticulture practices, pest identification and demonstrates the necessary interpersonal skills to interact effectively with others. The individual will be expected to continually improve his/her job performance overtime.

Duties/Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs autonomously and is responsible for the work product of:

-The field checks for pests and disease problems.

-The cluster counts/weights for crop estimates reporting.

-The maturity sampling on individual blocks for analyzes of sugar, acid, and pH.

-The tissue and soil sampling.

-The pruning weights sampling.

-Other data collection as requested.

  • Accountable for entering data into portable devices such as  laptop/tablet.
  • Participates actively in the operations performance tracking for critical jobs (such as pruning, shoot selection, crop thinning, and harvest).
  • Responsible for providing on-site feed back to the Crew Supervisor(s)/Lead(s) and reports issues when identified.
  • Performs and helps to coordinate specific FLC work as needed: e.g. receiving and sorting of new vines, maintenance, tagging, trials implementation, owl nesting box maintenance, baiting, bird net installation, etc.
  • Collaborates and provides necessary information to viticulture team and management in order to maintain high vineyard quality standards.

Equipment and Materials Utilized:

  • ATV/RTV, Computer,  tablet, GPS, Precision Scale, Pressure Chamber, Weather Stations, Precision Agriculture devices.

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • High School or college level coursework/training in plant sciences or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • Agricultural experience preferred. Bilingual preferred; at a minimum, the ability to understand and be understood by all Spanish speaking individuals. Ability to work proficiently in both in English and Spanish preferred. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule with extended hours, including weekends.

Knowledge:

  • Ability to prioritize workload and have a high level of professionalism and self-confidence; self-starter. Maintain audio visual discrimination and perception needed for making qualified observations. Ability to utilize and operate tools and equipment listed above. Acceptable driving history, Ability to operate company assigned vehicle in a safe manner. Computer literacy, MS Office, ability to learn basics of database applications.
