Operator 1 - Trainee (Sonoma County) (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision performs a variety of tasks using a tractor and/or all-terrain vehicles.  Duties include mowing, discing, cultivating, hedging, harvesting, fertilizing and applying chemicals. Also repairs, maintains, connects, and disconnects equipment used to execute duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates tractors (25HP-100HP) with attached or towed equipment, safely and accurately in open fields and confined vineyards.
  • Performs routine tractor maintenance, connecting, disconnecting, calibration and adjustment of equipment, cleaning and washing of equipment.
  • Prepares soil in fields by mowing, discing, grading, shifting dirt.
  • Navigates proficiently in and out of the vine rows smoothly while stopping and starting attached equipment.
  • Handles agricultural materials, such as pesticides and other agricultural chemicals using tractor equipment in a safe manner.
  • Writes accurate information of daily activity (date, ranch name, hours worked, job performed, tractor and equipment identification, name and quantities of material used) and completes equipment inspection checklist.
  • Identifies and avoids problematic situations, such as areas that are too wet to treat, and situations which are hazardous to equipment, personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Recognizes ranches and blocks by name; knowledgeable with surroundings and travels on the safest roads between different blocks.
  • Understands and follows company safety rules and regulations.
  • Reports daily to the supervisor any equipment problem, trellis problem or other observed problem.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 harvest seasons operating various types of tractors and mechanical farm equipment safely and effectively.
  • Required to become a member of the United Farm Workers Union and pay union dues.
  • Required to work rotating shifts.
  • Skilled in reading, comprehending, interpreting and executing simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Skilled in writing simple correspondence.
  • Skilled in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using whole numbers.
  • Required to lift and move equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of background check. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution plus 4 harvest seasons operating various types of tractors and mechanical farm equipment safely and effectively.
  • Experienced driving forklift.
  • Successfully completed one hundred (100) hours on six different pieces of Gallo farming equipment and executed close proximity driving, safe and efficient operation of the tractor and attachment, and the ability to back up safely with attachments.
  • Experience communicating with technical support and service providers.
  • Experience engaging in basic wood and low voltage electrical projects.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for long periods of time. The employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand and walk. The employee is use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Frequently mount and dismount tractor and harvester equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Manually operate tractor by releasing brake, shifting gears, depressing pedals and manipulating steering controls, and read gauges.  See or hear obstacles, such as ditches, row markers, trees and traffic. Required to handle, mix, load and apply pesticides.

Exposed to outdoor weather, agricultural chemicals, dust, pollen, soil/mud, grease/oils/solvents, insects and rodents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.  The employee is exposed to wet and humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee may also occasionally be exposed to extreme cold and high precarious places.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
