Job Summary:

The Manager of Cost and Inventory Accounting oversees the accounting for all aspects of the Company’s inventory including but not limited to grape, bulk and cased goods. S/He supervises one direct report and works closely with the Production teams to provide accounting guidance on in-season and future operational activities. The Manager ensures the integrity of financial information including costing and valuations and executes the monthly and year-end close for all inventory-related accounts including account reconciliations and journal entries.

Supervisors and Leads are fundamentally responsible for ensuring safety in their own departments and to uphold the following safety standards:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

50% Cost and Inventory Accounting:

  • Own all aspects of inventory and cost accounting for the Company’s various product lines. This includes, but is not limited to, reviewing standard and actual costs, calculating overhead, evaluating overhead variances and recommending product revaluations.
  • Develop standard costs to be used in the budget. Track variances, maintain variance accounts and re-cost as directed
  • Direct the monthly and year-end close processes which includes reviewing and reconciling all inventory related accounts, recording journal entries and working the Controller to evaluate adjustments
  • Assist with budget process to ensure SKU costs are accurately reflected.
  • Work closely with the Production and Accounts Payable teams to provide significant oversight for grape and bulk wine commitments. Prior to harvest, prepare a payment forecast based on grape and bulk wine contracts. During harvest, monitor grape and bulk receipts against contracted terms to verify timing and amount of payments and update the payment forecast as needed
  • Serve as the main liaison for all inventory items required during the annual audit including but not limited to calculating and providing inventory worksheets roll forwards, physical inventories and other analyses

25% Management of Inventory Staff Accountant:

  • Direct the staff accountant’s recurring responsibilities to make sure all tasks are completed on time and accurately. This includes, but is not limited to, account reconciliations, journal entries, data entry, etc.
  • Assist the staff accountant to evaluate, improve and streamline existing processes to create career development and efficiencies
  • Cross train the staff accountant on select tasks performed by the Manager
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provide leadership and personal support to work team; coach, guide, nurture and develop the right people; “walk the talk”.
  • Drive company focus, manage culture, encourage a strong work ethic and foster an environment of trust and respect.

25% Special Projects:

  • Participate in and provide support for any new product development projects by assisting business partners with cost calculations, evaluating opportunities and consulting on the accounting process
  • Represent Accounting on all inventory related matters for the JD Edwards implementation. Work with the internal team and external consultants to understand the current process, to design the future state and to create an implementation plan for all inventory accounting items. This includes evaluating the impact to the Inventory Staff accountant, redesigning or updating documented procedures and reconciliations, etc.

Job Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years’ experience in the wine industry working with inventory management or costing.
  • Experience with implementing a large ERP system is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.  Experience with JD Edwards. Familiarity with the following software systems is preferred: WIMS, RMS, bLoyal, Winemakers’ Database (WMDB), and Great Plains Dynamics General Ledger system.
