Harvest Intern (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Contract

  Stonehouse Cellars

  Clearlake Oaks, California

We are looking for a full time intern for our Lake County vineyard / winery from June through October (if possible)

Stonehouse Cellars is a small, family owned estate winery in Clearlake Oaks, Lake County. There are currently 16 acres under vine, planted, mostly, to cabernet sauvignon. We are operating a 5000sf winery with a by-appointment only tasting room. The winery is also an Ag Homestay. We make about 1000 cases a year currently.

We are looking for an intern who is excited about having a career in the wine industry. Ideally you'd be close to graduating from UC Davis, Merced or an equivalent place with a degree in viticulture and enology or food chemistry. Once you have to go back to school you could remain engaged on weekends. We are located just 90 min from UC Davis in a very picturesque portion of an up and coming wine region in California. We provide living quarters and the opportunity to gain experience in every aspect of grape farming, wine-making, cellar work, lab work, hospitality, business management and marketing.

This is a recurring position and we view the internship as a mutual try-out period for a potential career position.

The successful applicant should be engaging, fun to be around and ambitious. You should be enthusiastic to learn about agriculture and winemaking. You will enjoy living a country lifestyle while having the San Francisco Bay area just 2 hours away. You should be hard working and eager to learn new skills and tricks. A responsible, service-oriented personality is essential as is the ability to solve problems, work independently and communicate well with the rest of the team, with guests, customers and other service providers.
The most important attributes of a successful candidate are honesty, responsibility and accountability.

The following is an incomplete list of skills and characteristics that our ideal jack-of-all-trades candidate might have (fully realizing that a person who combines all of these attributes does not exist)

strong motivation to build a career in the wine industry
good communication skills
scholastic ability to successfully complete the viticulture and enology program at UC Davis or an equivalent program
strong computer skills (being able to design a website and manage the back end of a website, being facile with word processors, image processing software, video editing software, accounting software, etc)
mechanically inclined: should be able to perform routine maintenance on farm vehicles, do basic plumbing and electrical tasks, as well as repairs on the fly. Being able to weld would be a huge asset.
service oriented
organizational skills: should know the “big picture” and be able to propose the next steps to take
strong sense of responsibility and accountability
driver’s license, fork lift certification
spray certification
bilingual English/Spanish
